House History: A Bakery Connection

I live in a rowhouse on Capitol Hill in DC which was built in 1914. Because I'm nosy, I did a ton of research on the history of the house and its various owners. The first owner of my house worked as, wait for it: a baker. At one point in his career, he worked at Barker Original Bakeries.

According to an advertisement for Barker's in 1920: "Barker products are famous throughout the United States for their superb quality. All mixing and baking operations in full view of the public. You are cordially invited to visit these immaculate bakeries and get the 'Baker Habit.' The ingredients used are absolutely the finest obtainable and the result is an article 100% pure and 100% nourishing."

Baked Goods Summers

For two summers in a row in high school and college, Katie's worked at a bagel shop in Omaha, NE. Her favorite part of the day was eating a plain bagel straight from the oven smeared with salted butter. The hard bagel crust with the amazing melted butter on the soft, steaming bread inside was a little slice of heaven.

The Most Unusual Thing In Your Office

This might not be that surprising, but everyone in our office is particularly opinionated about food. Whatever the food topic, you can expect disagreements about it. What really got us going was whether a hot dog was a sandwich.
